Kailash Manasarovar Darshan -1

Beautiful HImalayan mountains

Mountains are there all over the world . but Himalayas are unparalleled for their beauty , ferocity and above all spirituality. It is dotted with a number of holy places like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Amarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Rishikesh, Haridwar Khamakya etc. The world’s tallest mountains, Himalayas meaning “Abode of Snow” is also the youngest mountain chain. These were formed 30 million of years ago and are un spoilt because these are covered always with snow . The highest peak of the world starting from Mt Everest are all situated in these ranges. The Himalayas spread east west from Afghanistan to Myanmar . These mountain forms the natural northern boundary of Indian peninsula. Many rivers originate from these mountains and irrigate the whole of Asia. The Himalayas are broadly divided into three parts the lower Himalayas, the greater Himalayas and the Trans-Himalayas. Mount Kailash and Manasarovar lake are situated at an altitude of 20000 ft in trans- Himalayas.

The glory of Himalayas is described as follows in Skanda Purana an ancient Hindu Scripture as follows , “ In a thousand ages of the Gods the Glory of the Himalayas cannot be described. Just as the dew is dried by the morning sun so are the sins of the mankind by the sight of Himalayas”. There are no mountains like Himalayas for in them are Kailash and Manasarovar declare Hindu Scriptures.

Himalayas are not merely a geographical feature , a range of mountains, but people’s civilisational identity which dates back to dawn of history. If these majestic mountains were not there the rain clouds sweeping up from Indian ocean would have passed over Indian sub-continent into Central Asia leaving it a barren desert. Archaeological evidence that urban civilization first started from the valleys of rivers flowing from Himalayas.

According to mythology, Himalayas is the birth place of Parvati the consort of Lord Shiva. Sati was reborn as the daughter of Himavan, the King of Mountains. It was here that Mother Parvati played as a child and did penance to marry Lord Shiva and their celestial marriage also took place in Kailash . So in many of the hymns Mother Parvati is hailed as Girikanya, Girija ( daughter of mountain). Also Lord Shiva is hailed as son-in-law of mountain (Himavan). Thus the whole of Himalayas is holy to Hindus.

The ancient Hindu text Rig Veda has a mention of the Himalayas, its formation and sacredness. The most sacred peak in the Himalayan range Mount Kailash is said to have formed 30 million years ago during the early stages of formation of Himalayan region.
