Nandhi mountain facing the Lord's South face.

Mount Kailash is the abode of Lord Shiva, He resides int his mountain , as such there is no temple as the mountain itself is considered as Lord Himself. Yatris normally carry out the circumambulation of this Holy mountain. This is called as parikrama in sanskrit and as Kora in tibet. The circumfrence of the mountain is 51 Km, Tibetian's do their Kora on a single day . but it takes three days for us as the highest point on the whole yatra Dolma pass which is the palace of Mother Parvati at an altitude of 22000ft is to be crossed.

Yaks being used for carrying the luggages

As already discussed Yak is the beast of burden of this region. The yak is used for transportation of luggage of the yatris during the parikarama. Some yatris who cannot walk, use yak for parikrama also. But it is better to use ponies instead of yak. One handler controls yak and the animal is also not easily controllable. But only one handler handles a pony so it is better to use ponies for parikarama.

LA-CHU River

Four mighty rivers originate from the Kailash ranges and irrigate the great plains of Asian countries, they are Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej and Karnali. On the first day of the parikrama we trek along the bank of La-chu river which is Indus in India and Pakistan. One Mumbai yatri whom we met during the yatra told that if we trek along the farther bank of La-chu we will get a better view of Mount Kailash , but only problem being only crossing the river.

Those who use ponies for Kailsh parikrama, the ponies are allotted by lot the head of the village normally conducts the lot. Here one yatri is trying his luck.

It is always an ecstacy to get the darshan of Holy Lord Shiva, it is because for this same reason the yatris take this difficult journey in the inhospitable terrain braving all the hardshis and it is natural to thank the Lord for having this wonderful oppurtunity to be in His abode. It is believed only Shivasakthi decides who can visit their abode and enjoy their hospitality, For this great favour the yatris thank the Lord and Mother with prayers. Here we see the yatris standing at the feet of the Lord and offering prayers for the welfare of whole humankind.

Yamadwar

Holy view of Kailash through Yamadwar

Yamadwar or the gate of Yama ( God of death) is situated at the feet of the lord. We start our parikrama from here, those who enter into the gate and have the darshan of Lord Shiva gets rid of the fear of death. After this it is the Land of the Lord and only the lucky few get a chance to enter into this land.

Day 08 Sunday 2nd August 2009 - Drive to Tarchen (4600m) 60km Over Night at Guesthouse:

Lake Manasarovar (4000m). Lake Manasarovar is regarded as the most holy of all of Tibet's many lakes. According to Hindu and Buddhist cosmology the four great rivers of the Indian sub-continent, the Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Ganges, and Indus all arise from the lake. It is said that Lord Vishnu floated in it for an eternity, dreaming, until the life force stirred, and out of the water's infinite potential sprang forth all of creation. This day offers a wonderful opportunity to see the great lake Manasarover with mt. Gurula Mandhata (7728m) on south and Holy Kailash on the north. After bath and Puja drive to Tarchen via Chiu monastery and hot spring.

There are eight monasteries surrounding the Holy Manasarovar Lake. This Chiu Gompa is one of them it is situatrd on the top of a hillock. There are some hot springs nearby and also Ganga Chu the canal which connects Manasarovar and Rakshas Tal. When water flows in this canal it is belived that year will be a prosporous year.

Homam and Pooja to Shivasakthi

It os believed that one can enter this Holy Land only on the invitation of the Lord. ie by His grace only one can enter this portion. So as a thanksgiving gesture all the yatris do the pooja to Lord and Mother for giving their darshan.

As we near the Darchen base camp we can see clearly the east face of the Lord as this face is not visible from short distance. In the picture we can see the eastern extension very clearly. The Ganesha and futures of South face is also clearly visible.

The view of Holy Kailash from Darchen base camp

This is the view of South face of the Lord which we get fron Darchen Base Camp. The guard mountains obscure the lower portion hence we get the darshan of teh Three eyes of the Lord and also the top portion His matted locks from which Ganges flowed . In the nest post we will start with the parikrama of Holy Kailash.

In the previous post we saw about the journey from Kathmandu to Manasarovar, in this post we will the pictures of the first darshan of Holy Kailash and the ceremonial bath in Holy Manasarovar.

The prayer flag post of Tibetians

This is a prayer flag post on the shores of Holy Manasarovar. Tibetians tie these flags as a mark of thanks giving to their God on the fulfillment of their prayers. There flags consists of five different colors which represent the five elements( space, air, water, fire and earth) of nature. We can find these flag posts all along the parikrama route at important places.

First darshan of Kailash

This is the first view of Holy Kailash . The south face of the Lord is the face which faces India and also this is the face which we get darshan for long during the parikrama. When we travel from India or from Nepal also we get the darshan of this face only. The Kailash peak resembles a mighty throne in which Lord Shiva with matted locks containing snake, Ganges, Moon and flowers and His consort Mother parvati sit and rule this whole universe. The snow never melts in this Holy peak.

Ecstacy of the yatris

The yatri's express their joy of having the darshan of their Lord by blowing conch which is consid
ered an auspicious music instrument used during pooja and thank the Lord. They undertook this yatra to have the darshan of the Lord and their wish has come true and they express their happiness in this way. Many times the weather especially heavy clouds play a spoilsport, there had been times when some yatris have returned without physically seeing the Lord because of clouds but felt His compassion in the Holy Land. These yatris are ecstatic because they are blessed with His divine view the first time itself.

Holy Manasarovar

A Holy dip in the Holy Manasorovar absolves one of his sins accumulated in previous births and provides deliverence to seven generations. it is because of the good in several previous births one gets a chance to have a dip in these Hly waters in which celestials have bath early in the morning and then pray Shivasakthi. By this Holy dip the yatris clean their body and mind before undertaking the parikrama of the Holy Kailsh mountain.

See the perfect view of Kailash peak standing out above the surrounding Kailsh ranges. The height of the Kailash peak is around 2000 ft above the sorrounding range of mountains.

Shri Kailai Bala litting a lamo in a Gompa

Manasarovar is sorrounded by a total of 8 Buddhist monastries also called as Gompas. Buddha's Mother Maya devi conceived Buddha after beibg purified by a bath in Manasarovar. Shri Kailai Bala is offering a lamp in the Gompa .

yak is the beast of burden and also domestic animal of the Tibetians. They rear them in their homes for milk and wool ans is also used to transpot men and material in these in hospitable regions. Also Tibetians consider Yak's horn an an auspicious thing. You can witness yak's horm in front of their houses. They believe that this brings prosperity and good luck to them. You can witness many heaps of stone written with mantras of Buddhist scriptures like OM MANI PADME HUM and over them these yak's horn. These serve as prayer spots for them.

Most of the tibet is underdeveloped and there are no proper roads , in some places a road is just a levelled area with rocks, also the weather is very much unpredictable at these higher altitudes. It will be shining and the next moment it will start raining, or it will be gale. So most of the time journey is made during morning's only it is better to reach the intended destination before noon. Here the Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles carrying the yatris are passing through a stream.
